Capturing light is the essence of why painting rules over photographs. If one does not capture the light, there is no use in a painting. I’m experimenting with capturing light and shadow in the foreground. This pheasant is for a dear friend in Escondido. Here is another study; J.M.W.Turner While I am working on a painting, not yet ready to publish, I thought I would share an old commission. A friend wanted me to do an exact copy of an abstract painting she found. It was challenging to do an exact replica of an abstract. But it was fun. I found that using the lines of armature was the only method suitable for getting the layers of geometric shapes correct. I had tried the grid method as well as a couple others. Here is the second hyper-realistic painting I did by learning/copying the wonderful painter Marcello Barenghi. We live in such a beautiful world where great people share their work and the methods by which they do them. I am waiting to be inspired, but I need to keep painting everyday. So, I am doing a little “copy those who inspire you” series. This is a hyper realistic work I did when I found Marcello Barenghi. My most beloved professor in college once told me that copy-work is the quintessential method for learning. Subtleties to a trade cannot be taught apart from copying. From Caravaggio, Da Vinci, Turner, Homer, to modern contemporary artists like this guy—Jay Long, or Kelly Vivanco studying their work is most important. This was a challenge I had for myself to do in one sitting (well, with breaks—not exactly a la prima). I didn’t do the decoupage background due to study purposes. And, it isn’t exact. But I learned so many things through copying this one today. I met Jay Long one day in Madison at a farmer’s market. My daughter was my inspiration for this one. She is always so incredible at calligraphy. Singing carols is one of our family’s favorite things to do around Christmas (or other times of the year too!).
