“A family friend commissioned this piece, asking for an oak tree to be painted over a metal engraving she provided for the backdrop. Surprisingly, it took several tries to figure out the correct harmony of asymmetry and balance. Similarly, trees and foliage hold a complex set of shades and colors, with a single color having different values when the sun reveals it or shade occludes it. I thought this would be a quick study, but it turned out to be delightfully challenging.”
