“When we moved to San Diego—land of jacarandas, the gorgeous ocean, and sun-saturated scenes—we knew no one and had no connections with anyone within several hundred miles. What we thought would be predictable and calculable was simultaneously joyous, adventurous, turbulent, and disheartening. One day as the five of us wondered where we would live next, I imagined seeing Aslan in Narnia. I imagined God showing up and making everything right. I imagined that all the things that hadn’t gone as planned finally worked themselves out, because Aslan roared the darkness and turpitude to silence and rightness. He opened up the light. So, I painted Aslan. After all, that is how the story really ends.”
